Masters by Research
The Masters by Research (MRes) is an advanced postgraduate degree which can either be taken as a stand-alone qualification or as a progression route into doctoral research.
We offer MRes programmes across a broad range of subjects.
The MRes differs from a taught MA or MSc course by placing particular emphasis on a large research thesis and fewer taught modules.
All of our MRes programmes comprise a Taught Programme and a thesis.
The Taught Programme includes 60 credits of taught modules, which provide structured and progressive research training relevant to the subject area and elements designed to broaden knowledge and experience by equipping students with a range of transferable skills.
The MRes has a substantial research component, assessed by means of a significant piece of writing in the form of a Thesis and an oral examination (the viva). This enables the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in formulating and carrying out a research project. In order to progress from the taught element of the programme to the Thesis stage the student must pass all three taught modules.
During the taught programme the student will prepare their research proposal for the Thesis. This proposal will form the assessment for a module.
